March Matness & The Power of a Consistent Pilates Mat Practice

If you’ve been around Pilates for a while, you may have heard the term March Matness. (It’s a Pilates thing — and I’ll explain more about that in a separate post on March 1!)    But as I was thinking about how we could celebrate March Matness this year at Rivercity Pilates, my mind kept coming back to something important:

I think a LOT of people don’t really understand what practicing the Pilates Method — and specifically the Pilates Mat exercises — could actually look like in their body.

And even more importantly… what it could feel like.

What a Real Pilates Mat Practice Looks Like

If you do a quick Google search of “Pilates Mat Class,” you’ll probably see big groups of young, model-like bodies in crop tops, doing intense-looking exercises with captions about “feeling the burn.”

I want you to know something clearly:

That is absolutely not what a regular Pilates Mat practice looks like — or feels like — at Rivercity Pilates.

When you come to one of our small group Mat sessions, you’ll walk in wearing whatever comfortable clothes you want. At most, there will be five people in the room. You’ll likely recognize familiar faces. You’ll chat a little before class starts.

Your teacher will probably begin by asking how you’re feeling that day.

  • Is anything tight?
  • Anything sore?
  • Anything you’re working around?

That conversation matters. Because Pilates is not about pushing through. It’s about practicing with awareness.

A Calm, Focused Start

We begin by reviewing foundational movement skills — simple things that help you focus your mind and connect to your body before moving into the classical Mat exercises.

Then your instructor will guide you through the Pilates Mat work in a way that is doable for everyone in the room.

  • You’ll feel challenged — but not defeated.
  • Focused — but not rushed.
  • Accomplished — not exhausted.

The more consistently you practice, the more you begin to recognize the exercises. You start to understand where to place your attention. You build uniform strength. Your flexibility improves. Movements that once felt confusing begin to feel empowering.

And you’ll walk out feeling more balanced in your body and more centered in your mind.

Many clients tell us they leave Mat feeling like they not only had a great workout — but that they learned something about how to move better in their everyday life.

That’s powerful.

Why Consistency Matters

The Pilates Mat exercises were originally designed as a complete system — a way to build strength, control, flexibility, and coordination using nothing but your body and focused attention.

But like anything meaningful, the benefits show up most clearly when you practice consistently.

Not randomly.
Not only when motivation strikes.
But steadily.

Consistency builds awareness.
Awareness builds strength.
Strength builds confidence.

And confidence changes how you move through your life.

Two Ways to Begin This March

If you’ve been curious about Pilates Mat — or if you’ve been practicing occasionally but want to build a stronger habit — March is the perfect time to begin.

🌿 Option 1: 4-Week Beginner Pilates Mat Series — $99

Starting Friday, March 6th at 10am, Donny will guide a small group through a calm, unrushed 4-week series designed specifically for beginners (or anyone wanting to revisit the foundations).

You’ll learn:

  • How to support your joints
  • How to engage your core without tension
  • How to adjust movements so Pilates fits your body
  • How to feel confident on the Mat

No flexibility required.
No experience necessary.
Just come as you are.

Can’t make every date? You can make up a session — we want this to work for real life.

You can purchase the series for $99, or use any Pilates Mat, Yoga, Strength, or Balance package to attend.

🌿 Option 2: March Unlimited Mat — $110

For the month of March only, we’re offering something special:

You can take as many Pilates Mat small group sessions as you’d like for $110.   Regular price per session is $30 — so if you add just 1 Mat small group session a week – you’ve paid for your pass!

We’ll have six regular Mat session times available each week, and you’re welcome to attend as many as fit your schedule.

This is available to both current clients and brand new clients — because our goal is simple:  We want more people to experience what a consistent Pilates Mat practice can do.

You can register through Mindbody or simply email us and we’ll help you schedule.

Curious But Not Quite Ready?

If you’re new to the studio and would feel more comfortable starting with a complimentary private session before joining a Mat group, just email me. We’ll get you scheduled.

And if you have questions? I’m happy to talk.

Pilates Mat isn’t about performing.
It isn’t about keeping up.
It isn’t about burning out.

It’s about learning how to move well — in a way that supports the life you want to live.

March is a beautiful time to begin.
