I can’t believe I pay people to make me sweat!

dollars“I can’t believe I pay people to make me sweat!”   says a student after a Cardio Funk class.  Another student answers,” I can!  I know I could do it myself, but I wouldn’t and this is much more fun!”   The first time I bought a 6 month class package, I almost had a panic attack, because it’s a big investment.  The difference it’s made in how I feel, the new friends I’ve made, and how I deal with stress has made it well worth the investment.   I pay people to make me sweat, and it has made a positive change in my life.  When I say I feel better, it means I’m not creaky or stiff when I wake up, I am so much more flexible, and I rarely get sick!  Knock on wood!  

I know,  if you really want to, you can stay healthy and fit by working out on your own….but most people don’t!  There’s no reason to feel bad about the fact that you have a hard time motivating yourself to workout on your own or you just don’t enjoy it.  There are worst things in the world then paying to experience a workout you enjoy and one that is effective.  Your health and happiness are important!!

Need some justification for paying for your exercise? Here’s just a few:

  • The act of going into a space where you can purely focus on yourself and your body will decrease your overall stress, improve your overall health and decrease your chances getting sick (saving you money and and misery in the long run!)
  • You are much more likely to create a habit of exercise when you have instructors and fellow classmates that you enjoy being around and by creating that habit you’ll start seeing and feeling results!
  • You will likely work harder.    I don’t know about you, but when I work out at home I take breaks to go get water, to go to the bathroom, and I rarely stretch that extra inch that really cinches in my belly!
  • You feel more accountable because you made an investment!  With me, my dedication goes up in relation to how much money I have spent.    When I belonged to a gym that cost $38 a month, I had no problem not going to the gym more than once a week.      But when I pay $16 per session, and I have to sign up ahead of time, and pay if I don’t cancel early, suddenly I am much more self disciplined.   I make it a priority, and I go to class.

Did my Pilates teacher not notice my scrunched shoulders that time?

shoulders scrunchedOne of the most common things I hear that tells me my clients are progressing in their Pilates practice is something like this,” My shoulders were up and you forgot to to tell me!”.

My answer….I didn’t need to tell you…you figured it out yourself and that is exactly what I want as your teacher.  It tells me that you are progressing in the Pilates work when you can correct yourself and you don’t need me to do it!!  You have learned what balanced movement feels like in your body and you can create it without my cues….super exciting!!!

Of course as an instructor I will continue to give you cues and fine tuning wherever you are but you may find those cues are much different from when you started your Pilates practice.  In the beginning you just need to learn the choreography of the movement in a safe way.   After you have a grasp for what the movement is then we can begin fine tuning.  Every time you do the exercise we can focus on fine tuning the pieces like shoulder stability, hip stability, how to integrate your whole body, finding control, moving from your center, etc. etc.

After you have started to tie these pieces together my job as your instructor changes.    My job becomes more about giving you cues to keep you progressing and exploring the movements in your body.  Maybe encouraging you to do something you might not have done on your own.

So if you find yourself catching your instructor not giving you corrections…it’s a great sign that you are progressing and you’re exactly where you are supposed to be in your Pilates practice!  Congratulations!!!

What I love more than Pilates…..

I was chatting with a group of people the other day ago and the topic of exercise came up.  One of my friends prompted me to explain the great benefits of Pilates to one of our other friends who was had been trying a new workout routine in order to get fit and healthy.  And although I deeply love to talk about the benefits of Pilates as an exercise program I found myself talking about something else that I love even more.  More than Pilates..crazy huh?

IMG_6324So what could I possibly love more than Pilates?  Quite simply,  it’s the amazing atmosphere that my super awesome, talented, caring staff (they really are rock stars!!) and our inspiring clients create at Rivercity Pilates.  I could talk until I was blue in the face about the benefits of Pilates, Yoga or any of the other mindful movement practices we offer at the studio, but unless you do these practices on a regular basis you’ll never see the benefits.

Believe it or not, even more than I love Pilates, I love the welcoming, non-intimidating supportive environment that I get to be part of and share with others on a daily basis!!  I love that men and women of all sizes, shapes, ages and backgrounds feel comfortable and at home working out at Rivercity Pilates!

If you’ve researched into Pilates or Yoga and maybe you’re new to mindful exercise and a studio atmosphere…you might be a little intimidated starting at a new studio.   Here’s where our staff and our clients change things.

IMG_0123_2Our instructors are not only highly trained in their movement specialty but they are kind, caring, inspiring instructors who love to teach, have fun and connect with clients.  I always “catch” our instructors and our other staff members going above and beyond.  It’s normal for them to take extra time before or after class to check in with clients, help them with some exercise or movement, or just answer questions.  It’s not unusual for our instructors to send a follow up email or even a postcard,  just to check in or just because.  Worried about being uncomfortable as the new person in class?  Our staff is so friendly and encouraging you’ll forget,  it’s your first time in!

1493173_10152188575767526_297849416_nSo what about clients..how do they come into play?  I always say that we have the most amazing clients around (really we do..)!  If you come to a class and you are brand new I can almost guarantee that one or more of the other clients in class will introduce themselves, probably share their movement experiences with you and give you some positive encouragement during and after class!  Our clients really are part of the family here at Rivercity Pilates and their love of movement and the studio shines through when they interact with others!

Marketing for Pilates instructors is just like learning Pilates…

As a Pilates instructor I spend a lot of time instructing clients who are brand new to the Pilates method of exercise.  I find myself reminding and reassuring them a lot that’s it’s ok to be a beginner and that learning anything new is a process that just takes time (I wrote a whole other blog about that here).  You can’t expect to learn everything the first day and really the only way to keep improving is to practice.

If you are an instructor or maybe even a Pilates or Yoga  studio owner I would say the same thing to you about marketing.  Learning to market yourself and your business is a process that just takes time and practice. You can’t learn it all in one day and there is always more to learn, so the best thing you can do is stay positive and keep working at it.

If you are anything like me, when I first started teaching, even when I first opened my business I was not thinking about marketing.  I had found something I loved that I could do as a profession and I was excited to teach.  I thought if I just did what I loved really well the word would spread and soon my business would grow.  I didn’t want to have to “sell” something because that just wasn’t me and I wasn’t good at selling things to people.

Well, in many ways my business did grow (but slowly).     It wasn’t long before I figured out that if I was going to make a profession out of teaching Pilates, I needed to figure out how to run a business and how to keep new clients coming to me.  I still didn’t like to use the word “marketing” as it just sounded to salesy for me.  Luckily. there is a ton a free content online and great business books out there and I dove in learning whatever I could.

I signed up for an online business training course for Pilates instructors (Profit with Pilates) that really sparked my love for figuring out how to run a successful business and make $$ doing what I loved.  I also started to love the challenge of marketing (and I could finally say the word without feeling like it was a bad thing!)  Through that course I connected with an amazing group of fellow instructors who were on the same quest I was.  To this day I still share ideas and business and marketing questions with this group of Pilates friends.  It’s been fun to watch their businesses grow over the years and continue to learn from them.

After having such great results in my business by putting a little effort into learning about marketing  I decided to dive in a little deeper into the business and marketing world by signing up for BSchool, an 8 week online business school.  (This was about 4 years after I had originally started my business).  I was starting to figure out that I needed to continue learning and growing my marketing skills if I wanted to run a successful business.  I was also starting to figure out that the more I learned and implemented, the better I got at marketing, and the better my business did.  Bschool was nothing short of amazing and since I have lifetime access to it I still go back and use the content on a regular basis to work on my business.

Fast forward to today, about 7 years after originally opening my business and my love of marketing and growing a business is as strong as ever.  My business has grown enough for me to realize I can’t effectively do all the marketing myself if I want to spend my hours doing what I really love to do- teach Pilates!

sm2I’ve learned through my training and learning process what a crazy powerful tool social media can be in marketing and I have been trying to use it, but honestly I knew my efforts were not that effective.  Sure, I would post when I thought about it or maybe before or after I was teaching, but I was really inconsistent.  I tried teaching some of my front desk staff to post or help but they didn’t always know what to post or the proper timing of it.  I knew there was a better way to do it, but quite honestly I was having a hard time figuring out how to learn it and how to find the time to do it!

Farm Girl Marketing SolutionsThat’s where Farm Girl Marketing Solutions comes in to save the day.  Becky (aka Farm Girl Marketing Solutions) had been a Pilates client of mine for well over a year and we often talked social media and marketing because she was a social media super star (clearly she loved it and knew her way around it better than anyone I knew).  I was a business geek who was trying to learn everything I could about how best to promote my business.  Somewhere along the way I asked her if she had any interest in helping me with social media at the studio and it turned into one of the best things I’ve ever done for my business and me!

One of the many thing I love about working with Becky is that I’m continually learning and growing my skills along the way.  She consistently takes care of doing the marketing things I don’t have time for but also teaches me along the way how to keep growing my marketing skills and be more efficient at it.  Just like my clients who continue to practice and improve their Pilates practice, I am able to continue improving my marketing skills every step of the way!

If you are an instructor or studio owner trying to figure out this marketing thing, don’t be discouraged!  There are a ton of great resources out there to help you out along the way.  My best advice is to dive in and start learning and practicing!

 

 

 

We’re not supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month….

IMG_1084Ok, well really we are but…..October is Breast Cancer awareness month and in past years we have participated by honoring clients and friends who have been affected by the disease, doing fundraising events and putting a team into a local walk to raise money.  Something that has stood out to us though is the need to honor not just those effected by Breast Cancer, but all cancers.  So we’re changing it up this October!
This October we have been doing a little fundraising for all those affected by cancer. Studio clients have a session tracking sheet and write a little message about who they are honoring, and anything else they want to share (type of cancer,etc) and then we’ve posted them in the studio.  We’ve challenged everyone to stay healthy this month and get their workouts in and we will donate $$ to a charity of your choice at the end of the month.   If a client got 10 workouts in,  we will donate $10, get 15 in and we’ll donate $15 and get 20 in and we’ll donate $25!

The British definition of Momtrepreneur! “Mumpreneur”

I love this new word that has been thrown out a lot in social media:  Momtrepreneur.  It sounds fun, hip and cool!  As a Momtrepreneur with 3 kids, a growing Pilates studio and a pretty busy Pilates teaching schedule I can tell you it doesn’t always feel “cool”or “hip” or even”fun”.

Quite honestly there are many days that I question why I didn’t just stay home with my kids or work a few hours part time instead of going all out and trying to build a growing, successful business.  I’m pretty sure my super supportive husband who would never say it out loud has this thought that too!

It never fails when I start to have some moments where I’m doubting what the heck I’m doing- something happens to remind me how much I truly love to teach Pilates and really enjoy the challenge and journey of growing a business and life around that.

IMG_6734For me those moments are almost always teaching moments.  It doesn’t matter if I’m over tired from lack of sleep, stressed out about getting the kids where they need to be, feeling guilty about not getting to every single event of my kids or not having a real conversation with my husband all week, or anything else.  Something somewhat magical happens when I start teaching.

I find it practically impossible to think about what’s going on in my own life and as soon as I start connecting with clients, paying attention to their bodies and movements, and teaching I feel like I’m in the zone.  And by the zone, I mean that space in your life that you truly enjoy being in and you really are just doing what you love…   And it really makes it all worthwhile!

So if you’re thinking of becoming Momtrepreneur, my best advice is to find something your passionate about and go for it!  It’s not always the easiest path but I think you’ll find it is truly a rewarding one and the happiness factor of loving what you’re doing is worth it!
