One of my long time clients was laughing at me today in our session.  I think the moment happened something like this:  I said ” We’re going to do five of these”.  As I watching her move I made a few adjustments as she was doing the exercise and at some point said, “OK, one more of those” I have no idea how many we did but it was probably not 5!  She did her one more and then as she got off the Reformer she was giggling. She mentioned how she remembered when she first started taking lessons with me and I said something like,” I’m not a very good counter!”  At the time she thought it was a little odd that a fitness instructor “wasn’t very good at counting repetitions” but she went on to explain that now she got it.

She now knew that there isn’t always an exact number of repetitions. It is more about getting to the repetition that was performed as well as she was going to do it that day with perfect form.  She also knew that each side didn’t always need the same amount of repetitions.  Our bodies are not balanced and many times one side needs a little more work than the other.  She also knew that my job as a Pilates instructor was not to count reps for her but to give her guidance on how to find the best movement in her body and for her body.

So if your instructor counts wrong don’t be too surprised and take it as a good sign that he or she is probably paying attention to more important things, trying to give your body exactly what it needs on any given day!

If you are new to the Pilates Method of exercise and you are just starting to look at ways to learn and practice Pilates you might be having a little bit of sticker shock.  It’s not unusual for Pilates equipment classes to cost $25-$45 per class.  You are probably thinking, “These people might be crazy if they expect me to pay what I normally pay for a month membership at the box gym for just one 50 minute class.”  Why in the world are the classes so expensive?

There are many factors that go into the price a studio charges for a class but the two major ones are what they are paying the Pilates instructor and the cost and upkeep of the equipment that is being used for class.

Professional Pilates instructors are not your average fitness instructor when it comes to their training and experience and their high demand means in the United States their hourly wage ranges between $15.23 per hour and $49.61 based on their experience!  Pilates Method Alliance certified instructors have a minimum of 450 hours of initial training hours and many comprehensive training programs require 600 to 900 hours of training.  Instructors are not simply taught to repeat movement sequences but are trained in how bodies move, how to adapt movement for various body types and conditions, and how to safely progress clients of varying abilities.  When you take a Pilates equipment class you are getting an individualized movement experience tailored to what your body needs.  Most studios only offer small groups of 6 to 8 people maximum in a Pilates equipment class so that the method can be effectively and safely taught to everyone in class.

Although fairly simple in design, quality Pilates equipment is not cheap and you don’t want it to be cheap! Well built Pilates equipment is designed to accommodate bodies of all sizes safely and effectively.  The spring based equipment needs to be maintained regularly and springs replaced on a regular basis to maintain safety.

Now that you know a little bit more about what goes into the pricing of a Pilates equipment class you might be asking, “Is it really worth the extra cost to me?”  The best way to answer this question is to try it out!!   The Pilates Method of exercise is a method designed to help your body move as efficiently as possible while gaining and maintaining strength, flexibility and balance.  You can definitely learn Pilates just by doing Pilates Mat work but as an instructor of over 15 plus years I can tell you that you will progress quicker with the assistance and guidance of the equipment and a qualified instructor.

Joseph Pilates designed the Pilates equipment as tools for practitioners and instructors so that you could  “get” the Pilates concepts into your body quicker and more efficiently than if you only are using your own body for your workouts.

christmas! It’s that time of year again and if you are like many men you are trying to think of a unique, thoughtful gift for your wife that she won’t want to return! What about purchasing her a package of private Pilates sessions? I know what you are thinking…..if I buy my wife fitness classes she’s going to think I think she needs to lose weight or get into better shape and that could get me in trouble! Let me put some of your fears at ease and give you some of my top reasons why private Pilates sessions makes a perfect gift and why it may be the best present you’ve ever gotten her!

1. She will feel like a movie star!! There’s a reason why you hear about all of the stars who are doing Pilates (Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz…) Pilates instructors are highly trained instructors who specialize in teaching the Pilates Method of exercise to any body type. Her one-on-one sessions will be tailored specifically to her body and she will feel like a queen! What a great gift from you! What could be better than individual sessions tailored to exactly what your wife wants from a fitness program?

2. Pilates is great for every body and every age. Individual sessions can let you explore if it is a method of exercising that she wants to incorporate into her life. Whether you are recovering from a back injury or an elite athlete- Pilates can improve how you feel, how you move and how your body looks! Pilates instructors are trained to work with lots of different body types and even injuries so there is no need to worry about if your wife will feel comfortable working safely with the instructor.

DSCN76943. Going to the studio is NOT like going to the gym. The studio atmosphere is spa-like, comfortable and welcoming! It’s like the “Cheers” of the fitness world! Everyone knows your name and your instructors know you and your body. You don’t have to worry about getting lost in the crowd. Many of our clients refer to the studio as their “Happy Place”!

4. She probably wouldn’t buy them herself. Women tend to take care of everyone else in their life first and often don’t spend the time and money they should to take care of themselves! You know how important your wife and her health and happiness is to your family life right? Let her know how much you appreciate all she does for you and your family by supporting her in learning to take care of herself and her health! Learning Pilates is a way to learn to move and feel better not just at the studio but in everything you do in life. Let’s face it, when she’s healthy and happy so is everyone else! In the long run the benefits of this holiday gift will come back to you a hundred fold down the road!

cybermondayIt’s Cyber Monday, and Rivercity Pilates has several package specials for the day.  Are you thinking, I already have a class package so I don’t need a new package?  Let me let you in on a little secret.    Pilates is not just for women.    All the positive things that Pilates does for women, apply to men too.   Many articles have come out the past few months that outline the benefits of Pilates for men.

IMG_1918Here’s a real life example.    I’m fortunate enough to live in the same neighborhood as Carey, and occasionally we work on some geeky computer things at my home.  Thus, she met my significant other, Mike.    Like many of us, Mike had relaxed his workout routine till it became non-existent.  Mike is retired from the Army Reserves, so he used to run daily.  Our best plans to walk every day always get hijacked, and as the birthdays keep coming, there’s a little stiffness here and there, and flexibility is pretty much a dream.     Mike has been very supportive of my Pilates practice and he’s the first one to recognize the positive differences that Pilates has made in my life.  I took him to a “couples” class, but he wasn’t sure it was for him.    That first class was pretty interesting.   It was a tower class, and when the instructor told us to put our feet in the straps for legs spring, Mike gave me the “you’ve got to be kidding look”, and that look just kept happening all through the class.

One afternoon, Carey and I coordinated schedules and scheduled Mike for a private Pilates session the next day.  He wasn’t excited about it, but he didn’t say no.     I did not go with him for his first session (or any session for the first few weeks), because I wanted him to be comfortable at the studio and not worry about what I was doing or thinking.   She scheduled him again, and just sent him the appointment, and he had another lesson.    After only 3 sessions, Mike had to reluctantly admit, that he could feel the difference.   He didn’t have as much back pain.   His shoulders felt better, and his legs started to feel less “creaky” (his word) and not as old.    Mike had Guillain-Barre syndrome as a child, so his hamstrings are very tight.

After Mike’s first sessions, he would comment on how Carey could recognize tightness in his muscles, and how she modified exercises for his working level.  As Mike’s Pilates practice is now almost 3 months old, his flexibility is increasing, he moves more and we even take semi-private Pilates lessons together once a week, and then he does 1-2 more private sessions with Carey each week.   The best part?   He says he feels better.

Mike would never have invested in his own health had Carey and I not pushed him and I had to do some major convincing about how amazing private sessions were and how well trained Carey and the other Rivercity Pilates instructors are.   They truly recognize how each person’s body moves, and offer modifications and progression for each person to be able to develop their own Pilates practice.

Introduction to PilatesPackageWhen you look at the Cyber Monday Pilates packages at Rivercity Pilates, don’t forget that Pilates would be a great present for the man in your life, and it might even be something you can do together!   If the man in your life is anything like Mike, you may get some static, and you may have to take him to the studio and promise him a local brew later, and he may never admit that he “likes” Pilates to you, but he will know you care about his health!

I clearly remember my mentor telling me when I went through my original Pilates instructor training program:

IMG_2738“If clients do the Pilates work on a regular basis they will get results and as a teacher its OK if you can’t explain every detail of that transformation!”

As a new instructor this is a wonderful thing to hear!   It means that even if I don’t teach it perfectly, even if I mess up every once in a while and even if I can’t answer every anatomy question my client asks me – it will still work!  As long as I keep people safe and keep them motivated to keep doing the Pilates work they will get results.  At the time I’m not sure if I wholeheartedly believed this – but I wanted to so I always kept it in my mind to trust the Pilates process and the genius of the work Joseph Pilates created.

Joseph H. Pilates said,” In 10 sessions you’ll feel a difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see a difference and in 30 you’ll be on your way to a whole new body.”

Again, Joe knew that if people just committed to a regular practice of his method they would see results.  After teaching for 15 years I can tell you there could be nothing more true!  As an instructor I see it over and over again.  When I notice big changes in my clients movements and their bodies I often double check their chart to count how many sessions they have gotten in and what do you know…it is usually somewhere around 30 when those big changes happen!

As a Pilates instructor you are always a student of the Pilates Method and the learning process is never ending.  For me that is something that I love about my career as an instructor.  I think its an important reminder for Pilates instructors where ever they are in their teaching journey to trust the process.  Teach the best class or session you can, get people excited about their Pilates practice and trust that you are making a difference every time you teach!!

388091_10151181366372526_1476770331_nBeing able to teach Pilates has opened so many doors and possibilities for me.  When I started the Pilates instructor program I was just a kid( 25…). I was looking for something to be passionate about, something I could get excited about, something that helped others but also helped me….. My choice to teach Pilates professionally was very selfish (in a good way!).

I wanted to set my own schedule, I wanted to have meaningful contact with people and enjoy my work, I wanted to be able to have a career and still live the life I wanted with my family.  I didn’t want to feel like I was missing my children growing up.  I wanted a career I loved that would help me grow as a person.   My Pilates education has given me all of that and more!

Not only do I have work that I absolutely love but I have been able to continue to grow as a person, really find what makes me happy and have a sense of what my purpose is.  Is my purpose to teach Pilates?  Not exactly. I feel like Pilates is part of my toolbox that I get to use as a way to connect with others and inspire others to be happy and live life to their fullest on a daily basis.  The Pilates Method has allowed me to take something I love to do(move and play) and turn it into career where I am helping others on a daily basis!

careyfamilyAs my teaching and life have evolved I have found even more joy in helping others on their life journey’s as Pilates teachers. I see my work teaching others to become instructors and embody the Pilates work in their body as a tool to help them find their happy, inspired life!  I believe we all have a unique and special gift(or gifts!) that we are meant to share with the world and Pilates method can be an important part of utilizing those gifts!

The mentorship training programs offered at Rivercity Pilates are truly designed to help new instructors create a lifelong movement practice and to help each instructor fine tune their gifts so they can better share them with the world.

To learn more about sharing your love for life and movement with the world utilizing the Pilates method, contact Carey to set up a complimentary consultation session to learn more about how we can help you on your journey!
