Shuva Rahim, New Yoga Instructor t Rivercity Pilates

 Small Group Yoga with Shuva
Wednesdays at 5:15pm

I am so excited to have Shuva Rahim teaching at the studio!  When I moved to the area over 14 years ago and opened up Rivercity Pilates I met Shuva in a women’s small business group I had joined. At the time Shuva was growing her photography business and we were both trying to figure out what it took to run a small business!

Shuva has been a friend and supporter of my business since the beginning. She starting practicing Pilates with me at the original Rivercity Pilates location, she was our photographer for the very first photo shoot at the studio, she took some of my favorite family photos over the years and she is truly just a great human who I am honored to call a friend. Be sure to check out the photo collage I put together highlighting some of our memories together over the years!

Shuva describes herself as a newish Yoga teacher (she finished her RYT 200 training in August 2022) who wants to share her love of Yoga with the world.  She shares her love of Yoga with others by teaching and writing! Be sure to check out Shuva’s blog here.

Shuva is excited to be teaching a Friday night flow small group Yoga session designed to help you build strength, flexibility and kick off your weekend feeling amazing! This small group yoga session will be limited to 5 participants and will happen Wednesdays at 5:15 pm.

The Yoga flow session will focus on aligning breath with movement and learning to transition from one pose to the next. (If you are familiar with yoga you’ll recognize that this follows the principles of Vinyasa Yoga)   Shuva will help you find adaptations and variations of poses that are perfect for your body.

Shuva’s small group sessions are designed for ALL bodies and you’ll be comfortable in this small group setting if you are a brand new to Yoga beginner or if you have Yoga experience.

Learn Yin Yoga

Saturdays at 10 am
Taught by Jenny Fitzpatrick

Yin Yoga consists of poses primarily done on the floor and held for a longer period of time, usually 2-5 minutes or longer. The approach to posture in Yin is different than other yoga classes which will typically activate different muscular groups to bring a posture into its full expression. With Yin Yoga gravity is used to hold a pose in place.

What does Yin Yoga do for our body?

  • Yin yoga encourages us to slow down and practice stillness.    Props like blankets and Yoga blocks are used to find the best position for each body.
  • The muscles should not be engaged during yin yoga postures. This allows muscles to lengthen and stretch and also gently lengthens connective tissues giving your joints a sense of space.

Common benefits of practicing Yin Yoga:

  • The body feels like it moves with ease.
  • A sense of calm and decreased anxiety and stress
  • Better alignment and posture from releasing tightness in the body.

Sign up for Yin Yoga Sessions by requesting a Saturday 10 am small group session  or email us and we’ll schedule sessions for you.

Small Group Sessions

Small group sessions are sessions designed for between 2 and 5 participants. Sessions meet on a weekly basis and the instructor creates sessions specifically for those who attend.

Small group sessions are great if you are motivated by working out with others in a supportive, inspiring environment. You can think of small groups as personal training groups with a specific focus. You’ll receive individualized instruction in a fun, comfortable environment from a teacher who knows you and specializes in helping you move in ways that are safe and effective for your body.

We have a variety of “open” groups that are available to anyone who wants to take a group session but doesn’t necessarily have others who are committed to practicing with you! We offer small groups utilizing the Pilates equipment, small groups to practice the Pilates Mat exercises, small groups to practice Yoga and Strength Training Small groups.

During your complimentary first session at the studio your instructor can recommend some small group options for you based on the type of session you want to do and current studio openings.

Small group sessions are scheduled by using the scheduling link below or can be scheduled by emailing the studio at rcpilates1@gmail.com.

Would you fit in at Rivercity Pilates?

Carey sadler, Rivercity Pilates.

Somebody asked me the other day, “What are the other clients like that come into the studio?” I think they really wanted to know if there would be others in group sessions who would be similar to them in terms of age and health goals.

The question had me thinking about how I would describe most of our clients who come in to the studio and I came up with a few key characteristics that I wanted to share with you!

Our clients are learners! They really appreciate having time to learn more about how their body works, learn more about how they can use movement to feel better and improve their health.  They really embrace their exercise time not just as something they do to lose weight or look a certain way, but as a way to practice things that help them maintain and improve their health.

Our clients love to know why we have them doing things and what it does for their body (and we love sharing that knowledge!)  Our clients will often ask questions about why they are doing something and they will often ask their instructors for ideas on how they can continue to work on specific things outside of the studio.  Our clients love to know that the exercises they are doing are helping them do things like improve their balance, strengthen their bones and stay mobile.

Our clients exercise to improve their health and they truly appreciate that movement helps their body feel better and is a health tool in their life. Want to know how I know this?  Each week so many of our clients come into their sessions not feeling so great in their bodies!   You read that right…they come in to exercise even though things hurt or they don’t feel the best in their body because they know that the way to feel better is to move their body!!

Each session when we ask clients how they are feeling at the beginning of their session we hear them say things like….my low back is sore today, I’ve been really noticing my knee hurting this week, or my shoulder feels really tight.   Our clients know that when they come in to their session their teacher will help them practice a whole body workout that feels appropriate for their body and they know they will feel better when they leave!

Our clients are confident knowing that they won’t ever be pressured to do an exercise or movement that doesn’t feel good in their body.  Our clients know that their teacher will adapt their session to them so they can improve their strength and mobility in a safe way. Our clients know that a regular movement practice helps their body feel the best!

So what do you think…did my general description of our clients sound like you? What other characteristics did I miss? Email me and let me know!!

If you need any help scheduling sessions or have any questions remember you can always just send me an email! I would love to hear from you!

New In Studio Yoga Session

We are so excited to be able to add more Yoga to our in studio offerings.

Unlike other studios who offer drop in style Yoga classes, we’ll only be offering our Yoga Small groups by appointment only.  You will not be a person in a room of 20 yogis here.   You can easily request a spot in a session by requesting an appointment in Mindbody or by simply calling us.

Just like our small group Pilates sessions, our small group Yoga sessions are designed to be specific to those attending and you can be assured that your teacher will take the time to get to know you and help you create a practice that you love.  Sessions will be limited to 5 participants.

You might call Kim’s Wednesday small group Yoga sessions “functional yoga”. Each session is designed around very functional, doable movements that benefit the body of the average person. You’ll love these sessions if you are looking for a fun way to practice Yoga that improves your strength, increases your flexibility and mobility and leaves you feeling calm and content.

Kim Blackwell will be teaching a Wednesday morning Small Group Yoga Session!  Kim is a physical therapist and Yoga teacher who loves to make Yoga accessible to all bodies!
